I used to not accept that I had art in me. I've always been more of an admirer of art. I aspired to have the creative dexterity that my Grandmother and Mother exhibited with handmade clothing and beautiful embroidery. I was always impressed with the arts and crafts my Aunt created in and around her home. My Mother and Aunt were/are always knitting, making something for a family member, a friend, or to donate to premature babies. Both of my daughters have art in them - drawing, painting, and coloring all the time.
I've always thought of "web design" as a way for me to use logic and code to create something beautifully functional. A well written page is parsed efficiently and the visual components come to life. I felt that I was always more of a "facilitator" in that I can take ideas and make them come to life; which, is more of what a web developer does. I wasn't that comfortable with my ability to "design". Luckily the first few web clients I had were artitsts themselves, so facilitating their visions was quite satisfying.
In 2010, I went to Burning Man – art was every where! The costumes, the mutant vehicles, the art installations, the cooperative & accepting atmosphere was a turning point in my own acceptance of me.
I am an artist, I am creative.
I too used to do needlework - cross stitch, hook rugs, etc. I never drew pictures, but did well when required in a college art appreciation class. I was more of a colorer like my oldest daughter, I'd fill in shapes and make stuff look 3-D. I always liked the contrasts of light to dark, which I enjoy in nature as well. I've always loved Halloween and costume parties - I've always been pretty good at coming up with a costume out of stuff I have around - or with just a little bit of thrift store shopping. Just give me a theme!
So, I decided to take a "graphics design" class. I learned how to use some tools I already had access to, and my creativity took off - I realized I already had the fundamentals of layout and design in me because of all the architecture, mechanical drawing and drafting I did in high school. I've shown some projects that I had fun making. All original images used in this body of work were provided to me by my teacher, and are assumed to be in the public domain. If this is not true, please advise me, and I will remove the image. I would gladly give the photographers credit, if I knew who they were.
I'm still very "wet behind the ears" as a graphic designer/artist and I am excited to create and learn more! I am skilled using a variety of Adobe programs to create custom images for your web site.
